SUMMER 2008

SUMMER 2008 has seen little change to the condition of the animals in this compound.  The owner has installed some kind of watering system.....primarily for the three or four trees she has planted in an attempt to make the place look less like a building site!......which are supposed to ensure that there is always a supply of water for the dogs.  While this is a definite improvement to the well-being of the dogs, it seems to have been installed primarily to reduce the number of visits that need to be made to the site.  On average, Dog-Girl is visiting the dogs once every 7 to 10 days, although if the weather is bad or there is a Fiesta, then there have been several occasions when two weeks have passed with no visit, the latest being only last month, in August.  Considering the high temperatures there have been this summer, this is cruelty on her usual scale.  Forget that the dogs may have enough water.......the food that is left will certainly not last them for two weeks and, with all the fighting that is heard on a regular basis, any decent owner would want to be sure there are no injured dogs lying in need of care.

She has a male accomplice who makes occasional visits in-between her visits, often for no longer than about 10 minutes, to throw some food into the pens.  If he spends longer than ten minutes at the compound, it is often to tend to the plants or just sit around smoking.  How he can spend any time near those dogs and not want to let them out for a run or pet them is beyond the understanding of anyone who cares about and owns animals.

CRUELTY FOR ITS OWN SAKE

On one day, in the middle of September, Dog-Girl and her male friend visited the compound with their own dog...one that regularly accompanies them on visits.  Cruelly, this dog runs about the place, free and well-fed, almost taunting the imprisoned animals who have no such chance at running free and certainly no hope of affection or love.  They spent almost an hour there, during which time they did not release any of the dogs for a run about the place, and entered only one of the pens to scatter some food about.  Just before they left, they were seen taking a small animal from one of the boxes.......it is thought it was a baby rabbit.  While Dog-Girl stood and watched, the man encouraged the rabbit to run away from him into an overgrown section of the compound.  At first, it seemed like an act of kindness...completely out of character!!

It soon became clear that there was no kindness intended.  The man tried to encourage their dog to sniff and play with the rabbit but, when the dog simply ran off, disinterested, the man picked up the baby rabbit and threw it, like a ball, about ten metres into the scrub.  Now the dog was interested.  He jumped on the rabbit and played with it a bit, but not enough to satisfy Dog-Girl and her 'amigo'.  The man again picked up the baby rabbit and, again, threw it away to encourage the dog to attack it.  The dog was becoming more excitable now, and was pawing and biting at the baby rabbit.  This 'game' continued for a few minutes more....that baby rabbit was flung around about half a dozen times..... until it became obvious that the dog was not going to maul the rabbit to death just to please its owners.  Eventually, the man picked the poor little rabbit up and dropped it back into its box.  The state of it was unknown, but one can imagine the terror and damage that such treatment must have had on such a tiny animal.

Satisfied with their 'fun', Dog-Girl and her friend departed, hugging and laughing, clearly in high spirits from their mindless and cruel game.  The fate of the baby rabbit is unknown as the owners continue to hide all their despicable cruelty behind covered fences.

PROGRESS FROM THE AUTHORITIES?

There has been no word from the Ayuntamiento or the Guardia Civil since the denuncias were submitted at the end of last year and, more, in March this year.  Given that it is now not possible for additional denuncias to be submitted from those who have already placed them, the fate of the animals in that compound remains unresolved. The cruelty continues with a determination that suggests the owners want to make the lives of these animals as insufferable as they can, just in case they have to stop in the future.

For those of us who abhor animal cruelty, the slow legal process adds to our distress and feeling of helplessness for those animals.

We need more people to place a denuncia against this woman and her friend, both of whom have shown a delight in the abuse of animals and who show no signs of stopping.  If they are mentally sick, then the authorities need to know this, so that restrictions can be placed on their contact and activities with animals.  If they are not mentally sick, then God help the animals in their 'care' and shame on the authorities for allowing this disgraceful behaviour to continue.

Contact us (dogcruelty in spain.mac.com) if you need the necessary information to make a formal complaint about this shameful situation.  Or visit the Guardia Civil office in Alhama de Murcia and mention the 'perrera' in Camino Real, Alhama.  They all know about the place and you can place your denuncia with the Seprona division of the Guardia Civil.

The more pressure we bring to bear, the better the prospects of saving the lives of some of these animals.
