ON DECEMBER 21st 2007, we found the body of the little greyhound lying in the dirt and squalor of the compound, though in an isolated spot away from his tormentors.......and at peace, at last. It had only taken about six months for him to die of neglect in this dreadful place.

He had been dead at least three days when we found him and he lay, undiscovered by his callous owner, for a further two days. She had not visited her 'pets' for almost a week!!!

ON DECEMBER 22nd 2007, we witnessed a concerted attack by four of the larger black dogs (the same dogs that had driven the greyhound to his death), on a smaller dog. They dragged it for about 10m, snapping and biting at it all the time, then proceeded to attack it with a ferocity we were too late to catch on camera. We managed to drive them off, but the smaller animal was severely injured, its testicles almost torn from its body. It was unable to move for some time, but eventually crawled off to lick its wounds.

Our pictures do not show enough of the dreadful damage inflicted, nor the pathetic cries and the pain the animal is suffering. As we were leaving, unable to do any more, the black dogs were lining up for another assault. Dog-Girl has not visited the site for several days and, with Christmas pending, it is unlikely she will come anytime soon. When she does, it will come as no surprise that she will not have time to notice an injured animal, or a dead one, in her haste to do her chores and leave.
AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT for 2007 was the arrival of two fresh corpses for the inmates to sniff at and dig up. You could see the poor, dead animals lying at the feet of the gravediggers.....one white dog, one black. They were unceremoniously dumped in this shallow grave as the two perpetrators laughed and joked with each other. After a cursory shovel or two of soil over the two unwrapped corpses, the inmates of that section of the compound were left to investigate their new arrivals while the humans scattered some feed around for the rest of the dogs.

After Christmas, and ten days since the last visit from Dog-Girl, we found the remains of the greyhound. The black dogs, not content with their frequent attacks on the smaller, brown dog, and driven by hunger, had feasted on the body of the greyhound.
At this moment, thirteen days since any of the animals have been fed or watered, the corpse is almost completely consumed. The dogs in another part of the compound have torn away at the fencing to get through to the area patrolled by the black dogs, and have almost completed the job. Only the head of the greyhound and two legs remain.
The pathetic figure of the little brown dog cowers in a makeshift shelter, afraid to emerge for fear of attack from the black dogs. His injuries are infected and festering. There is little we can do. We have tried to offer him food but he is almost too weak to take it.
The other dogs, those in the smaller pens that we cannot access at all, go mad when they see us feeding the brown dog and set upon each other in their desperation. All the dogs are now painfully thin, their ribs showing through filthy coats and they are all slowly starving to death. If their owner does not turn up soon, there will be more deaths and more cannabilism.
We have informed the Guardia Civil. They came out on Boxing Day to see the cause of our distress and take pictures. We have heard nothing more. We can only hope they will act speedily, a completely uncharacteristic trait in the Spanish, although we believe they were genuinely shocked by the conditions and will try to help. Watch this space.
